Stakeholder Engagement

Although it is commended that the stakeholder engagement reached accross all spectrums of society, it is important to not only consult one organisation from each sector.
It emerged from the Stakeholder engagement report that only groundWork was consulted among environmental NGO's. Other Environmental organisations, especially WESSA, WWF and EWT need to be consulted as they are more in touch with the actual impacts of waste on the environment and society. The abovementioned organisations can also, through their international networks like the IUCN (international partner of EWT) contribute to the process.

Working with people

groundWork never claimed to speak on behalf of society. We do understand how waste issues impact upon people and we work closely and daily with people. We have asked the department to consult widely and they have ignored us. It must be noted that DWEA actually met with industry on this issue. I would like to take concern about IUCN's independence for they have corporate sponsors and at an international level, the world's largest grassroots environmental network, Friends of the Earth International, who campaigns on today's most urgent environmental and social issues has withdrawn from IUCN for this specific reason. IUCN is no longer seen as neutral and free from corporate lobbying.
